Lucy's Career Journey

A career journey is often a mix of exploration, growth, and discovery. Lucy's decisions through the years have helped her realise what she enjoys most, where her strengths lie and how her work can help give her purpose each day.

    GCSEs

Lucy completed 10 GCSEs and enjoyed subjects like R.E., H.E., Music, Spanish, History and English.

    A-Levels

Lucy studied R.E., History, Spanish and English (AS). During Sixth Form, she enjoyed wider activities in school more than studying, such as helping organise her school's Formal, being part of the Sixth Form Forum and singing in the school's choir.

    Next steps after school

Lucy studied Law full-time at university, not knowing if she wanted a career in Law. She liked the aspects that included working in a team and found it hard to motivate herself to study in the library.

    Wider student life

During university, she enjoyed being part of the university's Christian Union, leading campus tours for prospective students and doing Camp America one summer. She loved meeting friends during the week.

    Finding work

With little work experience, Lucy found it hard to find her first graduate job. She worked in a local coffee trailer until she secured a 6-month internship on a programme through Ulster University where she interned with Workplus.

Advice from Lucy

How do you know where to begin?

Advice for your education path

  • Choose subjects you enjoy and are interested in

  • Think about what aspects of those subjects you enjoy - do you like problem solving? Creating things? Working in a team?

  • Get involved in extra-curricular activities - I enjoyed choir, learning piano, Girl Guides and my church's youth group

Advice for your next steps after school

  • Reach out to a range of workplaces to get a variety of work experience - ruling out areas is just as useful

  • Speak to people older than you to practice networking and ask their career advice

  • Always ask for feedback - particularly when applying to jobs. After graduating, I was rejected by a supermarket cafe!
