“Don't be afraid - there's always going to be another path. Think about what you enjoy outside of school as well as in it, because that plays a bigger role than you might think.”

Advice from Meg

How do you know where to begin?

Advice for your education path

  • Don't be afraid of choosing the wrong subjects, there's always another path, and you don't need to have it all figured out straight away.

  • Think about what you enjoy outside of school too, not just in the classroom. For me, fixing cars and phones at home is what pointed me towards engineering.

  • Get involved in sports and clubs. The confidence I built from captaining teams and joining Queen's hockey has stayed with me throughout my career.

Advice for your next steps after school

  • Do a placement year if you can - it helped me figure out exactly where I wanted to go in my career, even by ruling out certain directions.

  • Talk to people already working in the field you're interested in and ask for their advice - my physics teacher pointing me towards electrical engineering changed everything for me.

  • Don't be afraid to put yourself out there - I started with no confidence at all but pushing myself paid off. Use every opportunity and facility around you, including your teachers!
