Career Journey

A career journey is often a mix of exploration, growth, and discovery. Marcie's decisions through the years have helped her realise what she enjoys most, where her strengths lie and how her work can help give her purpose each day.

    Marcie completed her GCSEs at St Patrick's College Dungannon and enjoyed subjects like Digital Technology, BTEC Engineering, Maths and Further Maths

    A-Levels

    Marcie studied Technology and Design, Maths and Environmental Technology at A-level, choosing subjects that supported her goal of becoming a civil engineer and prepared her for further study and an apprenticeship.

    Wider school life

    During school, Marcie was Head Girl, played a range of sports, and took part in clubs, projects and careers activities, enjoying teamwork and making the most of opportunities beyond the classroom.

    Finding work

    Marcie gained work experience through school projects, site visits and a short placement with a local contractor. She applied for apprenticeships through Workplus, secured interviews, and accepted a Civil Engineering Apprentice role with Tetra Tech.

    Next steps after school

    After school, Marcie chose a Higher Level Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering. Combining paid work at Tetra Tech with part-time study suited her learning style and allowed her to gain real experience while working towards a degree.

    Marcie now works as a Civil Engineering Apprentice at Tetra Tech. She enjoys working in teams, managing projects, liaising with clients and contractors, and seeing the real impact her work has on communities across Northern Ireland.

  • Think about what you enjoy – problem solving, building things or working in a team.

  • Get involved in extracurricular activities, school projects and work experience whenever you can.

Advice for your next steps after school

  • Explore different routes after school, including apprenticeships as well as university.

  • Take every opportunity for work experience, site visits and careers events.

  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions and learn from people already working in the industry.
