About us

Ai Services are a world leading livestock genetics company, with over forty years trading domestically within NI.  Ai Services are the majority shareholder in Eurogene Ireland Ltd, based in Cahir Co. Tipperary.  Our core business is the production of semen at our Stud facility at Ballycraigy in Newtownabbey and the insemination of cows across NI.  The company are currently in expansion mode, the construction of a new bull housing facility is nearing completion allowing us to house 120 bulls on site.  A new sexed semen processing laboratory facility has just been completed and will be operational in January 2026.  This is a global first as a conventional and sexed semen lab facility and shall have full integration of animal, climatic and environmental data to facilitate the production of quality semen for international markets.

Ai Services have recently entered a joint venture with Cogent Breeding UK for centralised distribution of semen to customers and breeders across NI from our facility at Ballycraigy. This has facilitated considerable growth in the team and we are looking to build relationships with schools and colleges to provide us with suitable employees to grow the business into the future.

Our work

Bull handling, livestock husbandry team.  This team of four is responsible for the handling of the bulls for the production of semen, it requires people with experience of working with cattle, who are patient, empathetic to animals and have the welfare and husbandry of animals as their focus on a daily basis. This team are responsible for feeding the bulls, making sure they receive the appropriate ration on a daily basis, are bedded and comfortable, are clean and healthy and disease risks are kept to a minimum on our bio-secure unit.  The individual will need to be experienced in handling stock, familiar with bulls and willing to make Health & Safety of themselves and colleagues a priority when working on site.  This person shall also be required to drive machinery and have or achieve the appropriate licence for using the various pieces of equipment on site.

Store & Distribution - We deliver Liquid nitrogen which is a Dangerous Good to farms across NI on a daily basis, this gas is used to preserve high value straws of semen within farm flasks.  These are serviced every quarter and straws of semen delivered into these flasks by our team of delivery drivers upon order throughout the year.  We deliver upwards of 400,000 straws of semen to customers province wide annually, so there is a busy store where our team of store operatives pick and pack these straws ready for distribution.  Our delivery drivers make multiple drops on a daily basis to farms supplying not only straws of semen or liquid nitrogen, but also colostrum, flasks, gloves, sheaths, chalk, lubricant and a multitude of other products used by farmers and technicians.

Our team of inseminators cover the country performing Artificial Insemination (not to be confused with artificial intelligence) on cattle, both pedigree and commercial cattle.  Our technicians are busy year round, however peak months for breeding in the dairy sector is from December to February as cows calve and the cycle of life begins again.  Inseminators may perform single inseminations on farms or undertake large scale synchronisation programmes of 50 animals so no two days are the same when on rota.

Our small team of Embryo technicians work across the whole island undertaking embryo transfer work including the harvesting of eggs following a flushing programme and the implantation of the eggs for fertilisation and production of a calf.  This work is undertaken on many pedigree breeder farms and for those who are involved within the showing of cattle and commercial showring competitions.

Our sales team are always on the road dealing with their existing customers and seeking to attract new business through showcasing the bulls within our catalogues and promotion of our services.  Our sales team cover the whole of NI and deal with small and large farms both dairying and beef production, so they are very familiar with livestock breeding and genetic advancement.

Our lab team process and analyse the semen collected from our bulls on stud, checking for motility and mobility and ensuring that is of the highest standard and passes our quality control checks.  Our customers only receive semen of the highest quality to give them every opportunity for having a successful pregnancy within their animals and to advance the rate of genetic gain within their herd. All of the IOT sensors feed regular data into our lab, allowing for data analysis to be undertaken of the semen to ensure that we are providing our customers with a quality product and bulls are producing efficiently.

School engagement opportunities

We recognise that Ai Services operate in a niche sector, not many people will be familiar with what we do unless they come from a farm or have worked within the agricultural sector previously.  As more schools offer the agriculture GCSE qualification, what Ai Services do is becoming more familiar to students.  We wish to capitalise on this growth and demonstrate to students the breadth of the work Ai Services do and the career opportunities that exist within our sector, some requiring higher education qualifications and some that require experience or the right attitude.

We offer placements for 12 weeks and 12 months to students at our local agricultural colleges, these are students who are on Degree courses and diploma courses.  We offer an internship for 12 months where we train the employee in a specific sector of our business for 12 months and then hire them upon successful completion of their time with ourselves.

For students still at school we offer a weeks work experience within the business so they can get a feel for what we do and to learn more about our industry, in the hope that they may see Ai Services as a potential employer.  Work experience placements are offered from September to October and from April to June, taking on a maximum of two students at any time.

Summer placements for students can be arranged but require an application process to be completed.

We offer students the chance to come and see our facility and the work that we do, this is a ninety minute visit where students shall come to our facility and view the various roles that we carry out, in person where possible and by video or from our viewing gallery within restricted areas.  A presentation is given to students where they shall have the opportunity to ask questions of our staff in relation to the business and possible opportunities.

“We always welcome students to learn about the role Ai Services play within the agricultural industry, how they can become part of that sector and the breadth of opportunities that exist for students. ”
